John Williams was raised in Flamborough and is the son of CFL All Pro Defensive back and NFL Scout John Williams Sr. John Sr. was a coach at both the high school and OUA level while serving as a scout for both the Detroit Lions and the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League.

As an athlete Williams Jr. accepted a full scholarship as a student-athlete at the University of Rhode Island and then later Edinboro University. Williams was selected 31st overall in the 2002 CFL Draft by the BC Lions. In 2004 with the Toronto Argonauts he and his father became the only African American father son duo to both have won Grey Cup championships in CFL history. Williams retired in 2010 with his home town Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

 Williams has held down positions as youth worker, and domestic violence facilitator. He is currently the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Coordinator of Community Partnerships. Williams continues to be a thought leader in the performance space appearing consistently in the media including Ticats TV Gameday. Williams also served as a co-producer and narrator of the CFL documentary The Gridiron Underground.
